Unannounced Films launches international sales of Float.

Pennywise: The Story of IT distributor Unannounced Films launched international sales of Black Camel’s young adult drama Float at Content London 2021.

Float, a queer love story from the pen of acclaimed Scottish playwright Stef Smith, is a new young adult 6 x 10’ drama series that premiered on BBC iPlayer in August. It marks the directorial debut of Black Camel founder Arabella Page Croft.

The series follows Jade (Hannah Jarrett-Scott), a university dropout who finds herself back in her hometown working as a lifeguard at the local pool. Rumours are rife as to why she’s back, but only Jade knows the truth. Set in a seaside Scottish town, Float is a queer romance about how the secrets you hide can consume you.

Float is executive produced and directed by Arabella Page Croft, produced by Bjorn Hanson and is a Black Camel Pictures production for BBC Scotland. The series was commissioned by Gavin Smith, commissioner for Scripted and Entertainment at BBC Scotland, and is supported by Screen Scotland. The 6 x10’+ drama forms part of BBC Scotland’s multi-platform drive to develop and commission content for young, underrepresented audiences in Scotland.

Float originated as a pilot through BBC Writersroom and was developed into a series by Black Camel. Boasting a cast of young Scottish breakthrough acting talent, Float stars Hannah Jarrett-Scott (Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of), Trust Me), Jessica Hardwick (The Lost King, Snow Angel), Ben Presley (Doctor Who, Galavant), Jack Stewart (Outlander), Polina Sulim (Sweet) and Izuka Hoyle (The Wheel of Time, Mary Queen of Scots).

Writer/creator Stef Smith comments: “Delighted that I’ve been able to shine a light on LGBT+ stories that exist outside of urban centres and to lead this drama with two female queer characters played with such honesty and complexity.”

Executive producer/director Arabella Page Croft says: “Float is a show we are excited to share internationally and keen to nurture with broadcast partners. It’s been a simply fantastic opportunity for us to amplify underrepresented, queer voices and to introduce audiences to an exciting new generation of young Scottish acting talent.”

All episodes of Float are streaming now on BBC iPlayer.
